Ice skating, a German winter tradition

Winter in Germany is a spectacle of contrasts, where the cold air mixes with the warmth of tradition. At this time of year, the lakes become real fun spots, transforming into natural skating rinks that attract entire families. When the ice covers the surface of the lakes, the scene is magical: children and adults glide, laugh and enjoy the fresh air. 

Anke Käding, Head of DSM, remembers the joy of skating in her youth. “When the temperatures were below freezing, the lakes were frozen, and after a test by the police, we could skate”, she shares. For her, the experience was a family celebration, a special moment in contact with nature. “It's something about nature, you don't feel the cold. For the children, it's a delight; you enjoy the cold in the winter”. 

Where to ice skate? 

In Berlin, the ice skating season starts in November. The lakes are no longer the focus, but the rinks, allowing both young and old to enjoy this traditional winter sport. Christmas markets at places like Alexander Platz or Potsdamer Platz are popular in December. The city comes alive with different types of rinks, whether open-air, indoor or partially covered. 

The Eisbahn Lankwitz is one of the best outdoor rinks, perfect for skaters of all skill levels. This rink offers a skating area and also has facilities for ice hockey and curling. 

Another charming option is the Eisbahn im Seebad Friedrichshagen, located next to the Grosser Müggelsee. It offers stunning lake views and a bar that attracts skaters of all ages.  

For those looking for a different experience, the Zenner Wintergarten offers an indoor ice rink, ideal for skating in peace and quiet. Eisdisko sessions with DJs are held every weekend, creating a festive atmosphere that invites young people to enjoy music and ice. 

Ice skating in Germany is a mixture of tradition, joy and community. With every turn and every fall, there is a sense of belonging that unites people with their surroundings and with each other.
